Our Story: From the Pierced Stone to the World

Mbog Liaa USA Inc. is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2017 by members of the Bassa Mpo’o Bati diaspora in the United States. But our story began long before 2017. It began generations ago — in forests, along rivers, and in a sacred stone that still stands today.

The Bassa Mpo’o Bati people are among the oldest Indigenous communities of present-day Cameroon. For centuries, they cultivated the land, built thriving trade networks, and developed rich spiritual and cultural traditions rooted in community, resilience, and dignity.

At the heart of our identity stands Ngog Lituba — the “Pierced Stone.” According to oral history, our ancestors once sought refuge inside this massive rock formation during a time of persecution and violence. It became a symbol of survival, unity, and divine protection. From that history, we call ourselves Mbog Liaa — “People from the Pierced Stone.”

That spirit of resilience would define our journey through history.

Education, Resistance, and Vision

When European colonial powers arrived in the late 19th century, our people faced profound upheaval. Under German rule and later French and British administration, traditional systems were disrupted. Yet the Bassa Mpo’o Bati adapted. Many embraced Western education offered through Protestant and Presbyterian missionary schools — not as surrender, but as strategy. Education became a pathway to empowerment.

By the mid-20th century, the Bassa region had become a center of political awakening. The Union des Populations du Cameroun (UPC), founded in 1948, called for independence, dignity, and reunification. One of its most influential leaders, Ruben Um Nyobè, a son of the Bassa community, became a powerful voice for justice and self-determination.

The struggle came at great cost. Repression was severe. Lives were lost. Dreams were deferred. Although Cameroon gained independence in 1960, the bold and transformative vision championed by many Bassa leaders was never fully realized.

Yet the spirit of Ngog Lituba endured.

Where We Stand Today

Today, approximately 800,000 Bassa Mpo’o Bati live primarily in rural areas of Cameroon’s Littoral and Center regions. Despite their historic contributions to education and national liberation, many communities still face significant challenges — limited access to quality education, healthcare, clean water, energy, and transportation infrastructure.

But our history teaches us something powerful: resilience is in our DNA.

Continuing the Legacy

Mbog Liaa USA was created to carry that legacy forward. We believe that honoring our past means investing in our future. Our mission is to support sustainable initiatives that improve living conditions in Bassa-Mpo’o-Bati communities while educating the broader public about our history, culture, and enduring contributions.

We are proud members of the global Mbog Liaa Network, connecting Bassa Mpo’o Bati communities across continents — from the ancestral lands of Cameroon to the diaspora in the United States and beyond.

From the Pierced Stone to the present day, our story is one of survival, education, courage, and hope.

And we are still writing it.
